Union of Austrian Jews Loses Majority; Protest May Invalidate Election (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
A new Board to administer the affairs of the Vienna Jewish Community was chosen Sunday in the Kehillah elections. Fifty percent of those entitled to vote went to the polls, with the result that the Union of Austrian Jews, which previously held a majority in the Board, lost its predominance. The Union elected 17 representatives, with one still in doubt. The Zionists, together with the Mizrachi elected 13 representatives, gaining 2. The non-political Orthodox group elected 1 representative. The middle class retained its 5 mandates, while the anti-Zionist group was barred from the election by a decision of the Ministry of Religion which cancelled the group’s list. The group complained against the decision of the Ministry and it was viewed as altogether possible that because of this complaint the results of the election may be annulled.
