Hundreds of Vienna Jews today travelled to the site of the former Nazi death camp at Mauthausen to dedicate a memorial to the 121,500 Jews who died there at the hands of the Nazis.
A religious service was conducted by Austrian Chief Rabbi Eisenberg while Dr. Emil Maurer, president of the Vienna Jewish Community, and Dr. Heinrich Gleissner, Governor of Upper Austria, the province in which the camp site is located, spoke. Dr. Maurer pointed out that of the 122,768 persons known to have been murdered in the camp, 121,500 were Jews. In addition, he said. 35,000 other Jews were gassed at a satellite camp at Castle Hartheim and 70,000 Jews died on marches to and from the camp, bringing the total to 190,000 Jewish victims.
