Following the protest of the Jewish community of Vienna as well as others, two Vienna theatres have announced that they have cancelled scheduled showings of Veit Harlan’s newest film “The Immortal Beloved.” Harlan has four times been tried and acquitted of crimes against humanity for producing the Nazi anti-Semitic film “Jew Suess.”
Protests by the Jewish community were wired to the Minister of the Interior, the municipal authorities in this city and to the company distributing the film. After private showings, Vienna film critics criticized the distribution of the film because of Harlan’s role in Nazi Europe. The critics made note of the many protest demonstrations in Germany against the release of Harlan’s latest work.
