Dr. S. Margoshes, commenting in the Day upon the views which the Rev. Charles E. Coughlin expressed in his interview with a representative of the Jewish “Telegraphic Agency, states:
Father Coughlin’s is, perhaps, one of the most important and surely one of the most resounding voices in America. When he speaks, people listen, and certainly when he chooses to sound his views on Jewish questions, as he did yesterday in an interview, Jews are bound to give him a respectful hearing. We doubt, however, whether they will take his advice.
Father Coughlin advises Jews in America to pay no attention to the efforts now made to provoke an anti-Semitic movement in the U. S., since Jew-hatred in America is “either dead or dying.” We wonder where the Reverend Father takes his information. Has he followed the spread of the “Silver Shirt” movement throughout the South West? Has he watched the rise and growth in the Eastern part of the U. S., of the diverse anti-Semitic organizations, such as the “Order of ’76,” “Security League” and other groups parading in the cloak of patriotism, but really preaching racial and religious antagonism to the Jew? Is he familiar with the machinations of the far-flung Nazi campaign in America, and has he kept an eye on the astounding facts brought to light by the McCormack Congressional investigation into the insidious and un-American activities of the Nazi agitators in the U. S.? We are afraid that in his zest to convert the country to a silver program, he has not. For otherwise he could not have given it as his reasoned judgment that anti-Semitism in America is either dead or dying. We wish the facts would warrant this opinion, but they do not.
