The British administration moved today to strengthen its defenses in Palestine by announcing plans for a volunteer force. The Jewish Agency for Palestine immediately started recruiting for the force.

A draft ordinance published in the Palestine Gazette said that the new unit, whose strength will be fixed later, will be used “to assist the regular forces in all measures required for prosecution of the war or ensuring internal security.”

The force will be divided into combatant reserve groups under a commanding officer to be appointed by High Commissioner Sir Harold A. MacMichael. Its maintenance will be defrayed from Palestine revenue.
