State Supreme Court Justice Anthony DiGiovanna signed an order yesterday which changed the voter registration days of October 9-10 to October 3-4. The change in dates was decided by Judge DiGiovanna after a month-long court case instituted by Mordechai Rosen against the City of New York. Rosen, a member of the Association of Jewish Anti-Poverty Workers, was represented by Assemblyman Leonard Silverman and by Herbert Feinsod. Succoth starts the eve of Oct. 10.
Silverman, who sponsored the present State law which prohibits elections on Saturday or Sunday, said that he would introduce an amendment at the next legislative session to “stop once and for all the scheduling of Saturday for registrations or any other part of the elections process.”
S. Elly Rosen, executive director of the Association of Jewish Anti-Poverty Workers, who initiated the court action, has issued a schedule of 53 state counties which have scheduled Jewish Holy Days for local voter registration. “Based on this court decision we hope these remaining counties will see the wisdom in quickly removing scheduled registration days which conflict with Jewish Holy Days,” he said.
