W.j.c. Charges Return of Governing Power to Germans Furthers Growth of Anti-semitism

A memorandum charging that the U.S. Government’s virtual turning over of the complete governmental power to the Germans has resulted in furthering the growth of anti-Semitism and ultra-nationalism in Germany has been submitted by the World Jewish Congress to the State Department, the W.J.C. revealed here today.

Declaring that the setting up of the German central government “has not served the cause of democracy nor the ideal of genuine self-government in Germany,” the W.J.C. memorandum revealed the contrary results in five fields. It detailed reports which showed the surging growth of rightist political parties and factions with many former Nazis openly taking leadership. The memorandum, citing a long list of statements and actions by German government leaders and officials, declared that “ex-Nazis and their sympathizers constitute a very large percentage of the total number of local government officials” and “the Bonn Government does not hesitate to appoint to responsible positions men who openly played a part in the Nazi regime.”

The W.J.C. memorandum detailed some of the hundreds of cases which showed the breakdown and abandonment of the denazification program. Concluding its memorandum with a report on the continued and growing anti-Semitism in West Germany, the W.J.C. said that there is a “deep, underlying hatred and hostility against the Jews,” and that a “grave danger again confronts the Jewish survivors in Germany.”
