W.j.c. Leader Lauds Argentine Govt. Measures Against Anti-semitism

Warm appreciation of Argentinian Government action to halt the recent outbreak of anti-Semitic incidents has been voiced by Samuel Bronfman, vice-president of the World Jewish Congress and chairman of the organization’s North American Executive.

In a statement issued at World Jewish Congress headquarters here, Mr.Bronfman said that the World Jewish Congress had maintained close watch on the situation and had sent a message of solidarity to Argentinian Jewry.

“We have learned with great satisfaction that the Argentinian Government has announced stern measures against the perpetrators of these acts and that, as a result, the situation has considerably improved. We are confident that the Argentinian Government will take the necessary measures to implement the policy so commendably announced,” the World Jewish Congress leader stated.

The measures to put an end to the anti-semitic attacks were outlined by Dr. Carlos A. Adrogue, Minister of the Interior, in a nation-wide radio and TV broadcast to the Argentinian people. “The people of Argentina can be absolutely sure that the Government will unswervingly and decisively mete out due punishment to those who initiate and maintain a climate of insecurity and insubordination, threatening violence. The Government cannot allow such excesses, and it shall be inflexible in performing its duty,” Dr. Adrogue announced.

The Minister said that his Government would not tolerate the attacks. He added that the difficulties facing the country had been “aggravated by tensions created by anti-democratic groups which are the heirs of Nazism and of one of its most degrading manifestations – anti-Semitism. The assaults against our Jewish citizens, their synagogues, institutions, establishments and homes, are unworthy of the Argentinian way of life, and unacceptable in the present stage of our civilization,” he stated.
