The executive of the Mapai-Achdut Avodah alignment decided in principle last night against payment of the scheduled cost-of-living allowance in July to Israeli wage earners. Although the decision, if implemented by the Government, will hit hardest at the lower level wage earners, no strikes or other immediate protest repercussions were expected.
Details will be worked out at another meeting of the executive of the alignment, the dominant force in the coalition Government. The decision followed a compromise worked out between Mapai and Achdut Avodah leaders at a top-level secret meeting of the executive Tuesday night. The secret session was attended by Premier Levi Eshkol, Finance Minister Haim Trade Minister Haim Zadok, Transport Minister Moshe Carmel, Labor Minister Yigal Allon, Minister Without Portfolio Israel Galilee, and Mrs. Golda Meir, secretary general of Mapai.
