Hailed as a “statesman in the world of Jewish affairs, “Morris D. Waldman, secretary of the American Jewish Committee, last night was tendered a testimonial dinner by the Social Service Division of the United Jewish Appeal in recognition of his 40 years of outstanding service in social work.
Speakers at a dinner, held at the Pennsylvania Hotel and attended by more than 200 persons, included Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C.: Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, executive vice-president of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies and chairman of the U.J.A. group; Dr. John Slawson, executive director of the Board of Jewish Guardians, and Dr. J.J. Golub of Montefiore Hospital.
Presiding, Dr. Lowenstein declared Waldman represented the “type of leadership we need.” Describing him as a “statesman in the world of Jewish affairs,” Dr. Lowenstein said Waldman was “one of the few men in whom we can repose our hope for wise guidance in our affairs.”
Dr. Slawson, recalling Waldman’s role in organizing the Galveston refugee project after the Russian pogrom and his many years of activity on behalf of the Joint Distribution Committee, the American Jewish Committee and other groups, said he set the “right kind of example” to the Jewish youth of America.
The division, it was announced, pledged a considerably greater sum toward the U.J.A. quota than it did in the previous year.
