The War Department has sent further inquiries to General Joseph McNarney, Commander of United States Forces in Europe, regarding events which led to his reported statement of last week that the U.S. Zone of Germany was now closed to organized movements of Jewish refugees, a high department official said.
It is thought by the department that press reports led to misunderstanding of McNarney’s statement, and that the American military authorities in Germany are operating within their instructions.
The requested information from Germany is expected shortly, at which time clarification of McNarney’s ruling may be announced either by himself or by the department, the spokesman said.
