Dr. Ralph Bunche, acting United Nations Palestine mediator, who arrived here today from the Paris sessions of the U.N., said that the “war in Palestine is well over” and that the entire Palestine question is on the way to a final solution. He asserted that he will continue his activities as Palestine mediator until the General Assembly-appointed three-nation conciliation commission begins to function.
(The New York Times, commenting on Israel’s failure to win approval in the Security Council for its application for United Nations membership, said in an editorial today that “it was the abstentions which killed the proposal, “but emphasized that there “is still time for the abstaining Council members to shift their ground. The outlook will be brighter when all the Western Powers, including France and Britain, are ready to concede that the state of Israel is a permanent fact and that Israel rightfully belongs in the United Nations,” the editorial added.
(The New York Herald-Tribune, noting that “friends of Israel will naturally be disappointed at the Security Council’s rejection of its application for United Nations membership,” said that “final action on the Israeli application could not in any case have been taken until next April when the General Assembly will reconvene at Lake Success. Before that time, the Israeli case can again be put before the Security Council, very likely with bettor chances of success,” the paper said.)
