The gift of 1,000,000 pounds of kosher meat made by the Irish Government to displeced Jews in Europe was hailed today by Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee as “a heart-warming example of human action and an outstanding recognition of the pressing relief needs of Europe’s Jews, first victims of Nazism.”
“The Irish people, ” he said, “can be proud of their generous contribution, for theirs is a contribution that cannot be measured morely by the generous quantity of the supplies they have so freely given. It is a gift of the spirit, one that will be remembered with thanks and joy long after the supplies have been distributed.”
Mr. Warburg disclosed that initial arrangements for the gift were mads last fall in Dublin, in discussions between Irish government officials and Rabbi Isane Herzog, Chief Rabbi of Palestine, and Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, chairman of the J.D.C. European Executive Council. Announcement of the Irish gift of meat for general relief, including distribution among Jewish displaced persons on the continent, was withheld, Mr. Warburg stated, until tin plate could be obtained to pack the meat in cans. The J.D.C. has purchased 300 tons of tin plate for the Irish Government’s relief program.
