United States diplomatic officials reported today that the Israeli and Syrian radios have issued a call for all military reserves to report to their units.
Israeli Government officials were said to have explained that the call did not means a general mobilization, but only signalled normal military training for three units. A few hours later, reports reaching here said, Radio Damascus interrupted programs to order all military personnel on leave to report immediately to their units. U.S. Government officials were perturbed by the broadcasts. They said it was difficult to say whether or not they foreshadowed some military action in the Middle East. The next 12 or 24 hours would tell the story, they stated.
(A cable from Israel to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency said: “The broadcasting program mobilization of several units for reserve service. One hour later, however, an army spokesman reported that the call was a test of immediate mobilization of three fighting units for reserve service.”)
