The Jewish Claims Committee on Austria indicated today that reference made to the question of claims in the joint United States-Austrian statement issued this week-end in Washington–following the conclusion of talks with Austrian Chancellor Julius Raab who is now visiting this country–was not sufficiently clear.
The part of the Washington statement referring to the claims issue said: “The question of claims by American citizens against the Austrian Government stemming from the Nazi occupation of Austria was discussed. It was agreed that a prompt and just settlement of these claims should be sought.”
A spokesman for the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria, commenting on this statement, said that it was not clear as to what claims by citizens of the United States had been discussed. The Committee has been seeking legislative measures in Austria to compensate surviving victims of the Nazi regime and a settlement for heirless and unclaimed property left by Jews annihilated in Austria during the Nazi regime.
