The Middle East and its problems were taken up only peripherally, as one of the areas of latent international tensions, during the two day conference between President Johnson and British Prime Minister Douglas-Home, which ended here today.
The official Joint communique issued after the talks does not contain any mention of the Middle East-nor of the Cyprus crisis -but the Joint statement stresses that “both governments reaffirm that in all these fields their aim remains solely to achieve and safeguard the integrity and stability of the countries of the free world on the basis of full independence.”
In this connection, it was noted here that Britain and the United States have pledged themselves to guarantee the integrity of the Israel-Arab borders under the Tripartite Agreement of 1950 which was also signed by France.
