Messages of condolence from all corners of the world continue to pour into Vienna, where Bialik’s widow and daughter are, and where honors will be accorded the dead poet on Monday before his body is placed on a train for Trieste. From Trieste the body will be taken to Palestine for a national Jewish funeral and final interment in a Tel Aviv cemetery near the grave of Achad Haam.
Among the messages received here, was one from Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, High Commissioner of Palestine, who said: “Please accept my deepest sympathy in your bereavement. The untimely death of your husband has inflicted a grivous loss upon the Jewish people and deprived Hebrew literature of a man of letters whose genius largely contributed to the Hebrew revival of modern times.”
Telegrams came from organizations, individuals, institutions and Jewish bodies of all kinds. Among them were the Central Labor Federation of Palestine, the Palestine Jewish Farmers’ Association, the Jewish Agency for Palestine, the Zionist Executive in Jerusalem, the municipality of Tel Aviv and several publishing houses.
Bialik’s widow declared she did not want speeches during the funeral, but only the traditional Jewish ceremony.
