High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope told a delegation of seven members of the Jewish National Assembly today that proclamation of martial law to halt Arab disorders was still under consideration.
Referring to the projected visit of a Royal Commission of inquiry, he emphasized that it would not come until the country was quiet. The question of Jewish immigration would be discussed then, he stated.
The High Commissioner expressed confidence in the District Commissioners for the Northern and Southern districts.
The delegation, headed by Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, demanded speedy pacification of the country by utilization of the strongest measures.
He said that Saturday’s release of 25 Arab leaders held in a concentration camp at Sarafend endangered the country. He complained against recent arrests of Jews, imposition of collective fines on Jewish settlements and day curfew in Jewish suburbs.
Mr. Ben Zvi demanded that purely Jewish suburbs of Jaffa be included in the neighboring all-Jewish city of Tel Aviv. He also asked protection for Jewish agricultural sections.
The Agudath Israel was not represented in the delegation.
