Fred M. Butzel, Detroit’s outstanding Jewish leader, has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Wayne University.
The citation awarding the degree to Mr. Butzel stated:
“His active interest in the problems of human social adjustment has made him a leader in organized social work. We have turned to him in his wisdom and kindliness of heart for guidance and comfort, for in him we have seen the law, tempered with justice and mercy, serving human needs.”
An attorney by profession, Mr. Butzel, who is a graduate of the University of Michigan, has devoted most of his life to social service, primarily in the Jewish field. He has served as president of the National Conference of Jewish Social Work, for a number of years was a member of the board of the Detroit House of Correction, is associated with practically very important civic movement, is honorary president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit and was the general chairman of the Allied Jewish Campaign held last month.
Aided by stars of the radio and tin pan alley, assisted by the United States Navy, and encouraged by former Governor Alfred E. Smith, the Junior Federation of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities plans to make its Show Boat Dance Party, to be held the night of June 15 aboard the U.S.S. Illinois, its major effort in a campaign to raise a quota of $8,000 to go towards the current drive of the parent organization to realize $543,500, according to Milton Pariser, president of the Junior organization.
