Weeklies Find Geneva Parley Doubtful Boon

The project for a World Jewish Congress, for which plans were made at the recent World Jewish Conference at Geneva, have met with a mixed reception from American Anglo-Jewish weeklies.

“Once again the subject of a World Jewish Congress is on the agenda. A group of Jews, some of whom are very distinguished and for whom we have a very high regard, met at Geneva to consider, as the lodge phrase goes, ‘the good and welfare’ of Jewish life. One can have no quarrel with that,” says an editorial of the Hartford Jewish Ledger in its issue of August 31st.

“It is too bad that at a time like this when large sections of the world are under the influence of… Goebbels and Der Stuermer about the Elders of Zion and a Jewish ‘super-government,’ that these well-intentioned people should have given this opportunity to our foes to find a false justification for these libels. It is too bad and it is very, very tragic. When will we Jews learn to wash our dirty linen indoors?… This is not the time to convoke a World Jewish Congress.”

CANADIAN CHRONICLE

The Canadian Jewish Chronicle expresses itself as follows: “The conference is ended and because of the seriousness with which it was looked upon it is desirable to… examine the sum and substance of the deliberations…. It is to be regretted that the news as it appeared in the press is not a little bit clearer…. The reports spoke about the ‘Hebraic Parliament’ and…. the word ‘synod’ was used…. All this helped to mystify the already nebulous character of the proceedings….”

The Worcester, Mass., Jewish Civic Leader comments: “If there ever was a time when Jewry can and must unite to defend itself… it is now.

“Let us, therefore, urge upon our leaders the need to stop wrangling and quarreling and make of the forthcoming Congress a steadfast defense against present day trends. Jews the world over are ripe to give wholehearted support to the Congress.”
