Dr. Chaim Weizmann left for Washington today, suddenly. He was not expected to depart until later this week.
On the eve of his departure he addressed a message to the Jews of Palestine counselling against violence, in which he said: “No one understands better than I the state of mind out of which the recent events have come. Nevertheless, I deplore and disapprove of them, and urge that for the sake of our cause they should not recur. We have loyal friends on both sides of the ocean who firmly believe in the justice of our cause, and share our faith in the power of reason and justice. The overwhelming moral force of our cause must ultimately triumph.”
The newspaper Observer says today that the outbreaks in Palestine have weakened “the negotiating power” of Weizmann and his more moderate colleagues. “The impression prevails,” it continued, “that the British authorities in London are Underrating the strong feeling of impatience which has not been alleviated by reports of further delays while inquiries are conducted concerning the situation of Jews in European camps.”
