A report by a West German Government spokesman that West German scientists were cooperating with the Weizmann Institute on peaceful uses of atomic energy was refuted today by Prof. Shneor Lipson, the Institute’s scientific director.

Prof. Lipson said that neither the fact that there were West German scientists working at the Institute nor the nature of their work was a secret but that the work was not in atomic energy. He said there were three West German scientists currently at the Institute as guests–Nobel Laureate Hans Jensen, Prof. Hans Weber and Prof. Wolfgang Gentner. He said they were cooperating on basic research in physics and biology.

He also reported that the Institute was now working on 19 projects ordered by the West German Ministry of Science for which the Ministry had earmarked contributions of several million dollars. He said also that West German scientists were investigating the possibility of expanding scientific cooperation between West Germany and Israel in various scientific fields and that some of the scientists had already visited Israel several times in connection with such prospects.
