The world’s first machine designed to duplicate the energy conversion system in the human body’s muscles, which was designed by a Weizmann Institute scientist, went on display here today at the exhibition sponsored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. The machine, designed by Dr. Aharon Katzir-Katchalsky, head of the Polymer Research Department of the Weizmann Institute, converts energy in the same way as human and animal muscles do.
The experimental machine, which depends on the contraction of synthetic polymers closely comparable to muscle, sheds new light on muscle action in the human body. It also suggests possibilities for future larger adaptations.
