The necessity of placing more funds at the disposal of Jews emigrating from Germany to Brazil was stressed by Dr. Bruno Weil, Reich Jewish leader, at the end of a three-week stay in this country.
While moderate immigration can be continued, and perhaps accelerated, “it is too much for the Jews settled in Brazil if the immigration of poor Jews only continues,” he said. “The German Jews often arrive without any funds and the relief committees are not in a position to carry on relief work with their own resources alone.”
He expressed pleasure over steps taken here for forming the first community of German-speaking Jews in Brazil. The number of newly immigrated Jews was placed at 2,000 in Rio de Janeiro, 3,500 here and 200 in Porte Alegre.
He stressed the importance of a knowledge of Portuguese, “There is a superfluity of business men who bring with them a general education only,” he said. “Specialists in every field can be placed.”
