The Graduate Theological Union of Berkeley, which embraces a Center for Judaic Studies and nine Protestant and Roman Catholic divinity schools, will be joined shortly by Alma College, the theological training center for Jesuit priests on the West Coast.
The announcement that the Jesuit seminary would relocate near the Graduate Theological Union was made yesterday after it was learned that the move was approved by the Superior General of the Jesuit Order in Rome. The announcement noted the “creative lead” taken by the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish community in the formation of the GTU which is adjacent to the University of California campus.
The religious schools participating in the GTU share a common faculty at the doctoral level. Catholic, Jewish and Protestant students share study facilities and living quarters in a total ecumenical environment. The Center for Judaic Studies is headed by Rabbi David Winston, who holds degrees from Yeshiva University and Columbia University. He served as an Army chaplain and participated in archaeological work in Israel.
