The Ministry of Interior has rejected a demand by a citizens group opposed to the ultra right-wing National Democratic Party that the elections committee bar the party from participating in next month’s national elections. The Actions Committee for Democratic Progress, which made the demand, charged that the NPD was the successor to the Nazi Party, and under the West German Constitution, is therefore illegal since the Constitution prohibits the existence of a Nazi Party.
A Ministry spokesman said however that the duty of the elections committee was to ascertain whether a political party had fulfilled the conditions of Art. 19 of the election law not to determine whether it was for or against the constitution.
