The Judicial committee of the Bundesrat, West Germany’s Upper House, has decided by majority vote to recommend that the Bundestag (Lower House) take the initiative for the abolition of the statute of limitations on Nazi war crimes prosecutions. The statute will go into effect at the end of this year unless the Parliament decides otherwise. At present there is no majority voice in the Bundestag on the issue, one way or another. State Secretary Gunther Diehl said in reply to a JTA question that the cabinet will discuss the statute in the near future because “a decision will have to be made sometime.” The Bremen City Council this week adopted a resolution calling for abolition of the statute of limitations.
