The West German Government has ratified the 1951 United Nations Convention on Refugees which extends legal, employment and social welfare protection to political refugees irrespective of nationality. President Theodor Huess signed the convention for the Federal Republic.
The convention, ratified by only two other states, also assures a degree of legal equality within Germany to those Germans now living abroad who lost their nationality without acquiring citizenship of another country. Most of the persons now stateless in that category are Jews who fled Germany during the Nazi regime.
