The University of West Virginia Hillel Foundation is 1930 champion of the National Hillel Debating League sponsored by the Independent Order of B’nai B’rith. By virtue of the team’s victory over a team representing the University of Michigan in a final contest of the elimination series in Morgantown, they will receive custody of the Hillel debating trophy for the coming year.

The question debated throughout the 1930 series was “Resolved, That the present immigration laws are beneficial to the American Jewry.” The winning West Virginia team which upheld the affirmative on this question, was composed of Julius Cohen, Morgantown, W. Va.; Jerome Katz. Bluefield, W. Va., and Irving Hoffman, New York City. Representing Michigan on the negative were Ephraim Gomberg, Detroit, Mich.; Elliot Moyer, Detroit, Mich., and Nathan Levy, South Bend, Ind. Professor James McGrew of the Speech Department of the University of West Virginia, acted as single judge. Bernard Sclove presided at the contest.
