“What Israel needs is not parity with the enemies of the Jewish people, but a qualitative advantage.” Ambassador Simcha Dinitz told 45 Jewish communal leaders meeting at the Israeli Chancellory who pledged $6.4 million for the United Jewish Appeal’s 1977 campaign–20 percent more than 1976. Without this advantage, Dinitz explained, Israelis “will not have the strength to assure a strong, viable Jewish homeland. Together, morality plus strength, are attributes that will preserve our people. Without them, Jewry could disappear through lack of purpose.”
