The art collection of Joseph Hirshhorn, estimated to be worth between $25, 000, 000 and $50, 000, 000, was accepted yesterday by President Johnson in behalf of the American people.
At a White House Rose Garden ceremony, the President announced he was sending a bill to Congress to authorize the Smithsonian Institute to build a gallery to be known as the Joseph Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The gift of the Latvian-born Jewish financier to the nation consists of more than 1, 500 pieces of sculpture and more than 4, 800 paintings and drawings.
