The publication of a Spanish book on the life and works of the Rambam, great Jewish philosopher, commentator and scientist, the 800th anniversary of whose birth comes in March, 1935, has been decided upon by the local “Hebraica” organization as a step towards popularizing the name and philosophy of the famous writer among Spanish speaking people.
The book will contain essays and monographs on the Rambam’s versatility as physician, philosopher, commentator on the Talmud, and codifier of Jewish law and of the dogmas of Jewish ethics. Translations of the Rambam’s works, many of them heretofore unknown to Spanish readers, will also be included.
Among those contributing to the volume will be a number of scholars from the Argentine and other countries. Dr. L. Duchovne, Spanish Jewish writer and scientist, has been named editor of the project.
A Spanish translation of the first part of the “Guide to the Perplexed” (Moreh Nebukim) was published in Madrid two years ago by Jose Suarez Lorenso.
Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides), the Rambam, was born in Cordoba, Spain, in 1135 and died at Fostat (Old Cairo) in 1204. His remains were moved to Tiberias, Palestine.
