William S. Paley, chairman of the board of the Columbia Broadcasting System, has been named chairman of the advisory council of the $170,000,000 United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine, it was announced today by Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman of the U.J.A. In a statement accepting the position, Mr. Paley hailed the United Jewish Appeal as “a cause of major world significance” and said he was assuming a position of leadership “out of a firm conviction that every American should share in binding the wounds of war and healing the scars of cruel and widespread oppression in Europe.”
