For the first time in Maryland court history, proceedings were brought here by a divorced woman to have by a divorced woman to have the court require her legally divorced husband to give her a separation under the Jewish religion through their religious institutions.
Rose Zerlin filed the proceedings in the Circuit Court against Isidor Levin, from whom she obtained a divorce in the same court last September 13.
The woman claimed that her divorced husband had signed a contract agreeing “in consideration of the sum of $1 and other good and valuable considerations” to “give unto his wife a Jewish divorce” at her expense, in case she was granted a legal divorce decree.
She contended that Levin refused to carry out the contract concerning the religious divorce. She also alleged that under the laws of the orthodox Jewish faith, only the husband can seek a religious divorce.
