With thousands of women throughout the city enlisted as volunteers, tomorrow will see the launching of an intensive drive to raise $200,000 which will represent the women’s share toward New York City’s quota of $1,200,000 for German Jewish relief, under the auspices of the United Jewish Appeal.
Mrs. Roger W. Straus heads the women’s divison. Associated with her in the relief effort are Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman, Mrs. Rebekkah Kohut, Mrs. Abram I. Elkus, Mrs. Daniel Guggenheim, Mrs. Henry Morgenthau and others. The campaign will open officially at four o’clock Thursday when the presidents of all Jewish women’s organizations in New York will gather at tea in Mrs. Straus’ home, 6 East Ninety-third street.
Women and children are the principal sufferers in the present German tragedy, Mrs. Straus declared, in discussing the formation of the women’s division. “What we can do to ease their lot is to provide them with facilities that would help take their minds off their tragedy, and at the same time afford an opportunity of rebuilding their lives for the future.” In this connection, she pointed out, more Jewish schools should be provided or arranged for education in Palestine.
