The sum of $1,350,665 has thus far been collected this year by the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, it was announced yesterday at a luncheon marking the opening of the 1951 campaign of the Division.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was one of the principal speakers at the luncheon, said that one important aspect of the assistance given by the U.J.A. to Israel is that the Jewish state may serve as an example of greater human rights and freedoms in the area. Nelson A. Rockefeller, urging support for Israel, described the Jewish state as an example of the “humanitarian spirit in action.” Other speakers included Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, Mrs. David M. Levy, Max Lerner and Thomas Sugrue, author of “Watch for the Morning.”
