Jews in the displaced persons camps are being driven to desperation by the uncertainty of their future, Rabbi Meisels, acting Chief Rabbi of the British zone of Germany, said today, addressing the world conference of the Agudas Israel being held here.
The delegates, representing 25 countries including the United States, Palestine, and some of the South American republics, also heard Rabbi I. M. Lewin of Jerusalem state that the enormity of the Jewish tragedy is not sufficiently appreciated and that whatever differences of opinion there are among world Jewry, they are united in favor of opening the gates to Palestine and for the abolition of the White Paper."
The conference witnessed a dramatic scene, when 20 young men recently liberated from German concentration camps broke down at Rabbi Meisels’ description of the gas drainers at the notorious Oswiecim camp in Poland. This is the first time that representatives from the Jewish displaced persons camps have been able to come to England to attend a Jewish gathering.
Rabbi Lewin, who is vice-president of the Agudas Israel, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent that because of the inability of some of the central bodes to send delegates, all resolutions passed at the conference will have to be submitted to them for approval.
Other speakers at the conference included H.A. Goodman, political secretary of the Agudas Israel, Dr. Israel Feldman, chairman of the Palestine Committee of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Rabbi Teitz of New York and Maitre Muller of Paris.
