The World Congress of Jewish Physicians concluded here tonight with an appeal to young Jewish doctors throughout the world to come to Israel to serve as volunteers for one or two years in the medical system of the country.
The congress, attended by about 300 delegates from 18 countries, adopted a resolution condemning the use by Nazi doctors of medical knowledge to commit atrocities and to carry out sterilization with a view to annihilating Jews and others hostile to the Nazi regime. The resolution appealed to the medical world to “strengthen the foundations of medical ethics and forbid the use of science to destroy man or his personality.”
It was reported at the congress that Israel is experiencing an acute shortage in physicians. At present there are about 3,000 practicing physicians in Israel. However, a large number of them are alderfly people who had no opportunity to follow the latest developments in the field of medical science. Israeli delegates emphasized that the country is particularly short of young physicians able to work in immigrant camps in various parts of the Jewish State.
