THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS TODAY LODGED A PROTEST WITH THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS DANZIG COMMITTEE OF THREE AGAINST THE FAILURE OF THE LEAGUE HIGH COMMISSIONER AT DANZIG TO TAKE ANY ACTION AGAINST ANTI-SEMITIC EXCESSES IN THE FREE CITY, THE HAVAS NEWS AGENCY REPORTED.

THE PROTEST WAS ADDRESSED TO THE FOREIGN OFFICES OF FRANCE, GREAT BRITAIN AND SWEDEN WHO COMPRISE THE LEAGUE COMMITTEE. IT EMPHASIZED THE BIG INCREASE IN JEWISH PERSECUTION IN DANZIG DURING THE PAST TWO WEEKS.

THE COMMITTEE RECALLED THAT IN THE PAST YEAR IT HAD CALLED THE LEAGUE’S ATTENTION TO ATTACKS AGAINST JEWS IN THE FREE CITY IN VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION GUARANTEED BY THE LEAGUE. THESE APPEALS APPARENTLY WERE IGNORED, THE PROTEST SAID.

ON OCT. 10, THE NAZI FREE CITY LEADER ALBERT FOERSTER ANNOUNCED A CAMPAIGN TO “REDUCE THE JEWISH RABBLE OF DANZIG” TO THE SAME STATE AS THE JEWISH POPULATION OF GERMANY, THE COMMITTEE SAID.

NO ACTION WAS TAKEN BY THE LEAGUE HIGH COMMISSIONER IN CONNECTION WITH THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AND EIGHT DAYS LATER ANTI-SEMITIC EXCESSES WHICH ATTAINED THE INTENSITY OF A VERITABLE POGROM BROKE OUT IN THE FREE CITY, IT WAS CLAIMED. THE COMMITTEE CHARGED THAT NO ACTION OF ANY KIND WAS TAKEN TO PROTECT THE JEWISH RESIDENTS OF DANZIG AGAINST THESE EXCESSES.

THE PROTEST CONCLUDED WITH AN APPEAL THAT “NO TIME BE LOST IN REESTABLISHING THE LEGAL SITUATION IN THE FREE CITY.”
