The main problem facing world Jewry is to maintain emotional and spiritual liaison between Israel and Jews in other countries, and at the same time to maintain a legal separation, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the World Jewish Congress Executive Committee and chairman of the American Section of the Jewish Agency, said today at a luncheon session of the Summer Rabbinical Institute of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Addressing more than 100 rabbis from many parts of the country who are taking an eight-day study course, Dr. Goldmann said: “The outside world needs the spiritual and cultural guidance of Israel, and Israel needs the financial and spiritual help of the outside world, A way must be found to maintain the ties while continuing the legal separation.”
Dr. Goldmann singled out two other questions for special attention–the 600,000 Jews resident in Latin America and the plight of Jews in Moslem countries. Jews in Latin America face the danger of rapid assimilation in the countries in which they live, liquidating their communities and losing their special character, unless they are provided with teachers, schools and other cultural assistance, he said.
