A conference to discuss ways to combat racism, which was due to be conducted jointly by the League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICA) and non-Jewish civil rights organizations, was cancelled Sunday after the Christian groups refused to cooperate with LICA. The reason for the last minute refusal was the scheduled participation of Jacques Soustelle, an anti-Gaullist activist during the Algerian War and a former Cabinet minister. Soustelle, a right-wing politician who is a member of the executive committee of LICA for the Rhone province, was physically assaulted last month for his pro-Israeli views and his rightist past. Among the groups which refused to participate was the French chapter of the League for Human Rights and various representatives of Catholic and Protestant French churches in this city.
