Prof. Shimon Yiftach, director of the Sorek Nuclear Research Center, has predicted that the Arab states will probably have nuclear capabilities by the 1980s and some may already have nuclear weapons. Speaking to a meeting of the Nuclear Science Club, Yiftach, a member of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, said that although the reactors bought by Egypt and Saudi Arabia recently are outmoded, they would be able to produce enough plutonium for atomic weapons. Israel has two atomic reactors.
