The London Sunday Dispatch, in an article on Neville Laski, president of the Board of Jewish Deputies, gives the following information:

Son of a wealthy Manchester merchant, who has done more for Lancashire than most men, Neville Laski has few rivals at Manchester Grammar School and Clifton College. At Cambridge he won a B. A. degree.

In Manchester it is said that he was earning £10,000 a year at the age of 30. This Mr. Laski has always denied.

Just before the war he married a beautiful girl, daughter of a high Jewish dignitary.

After leaving the army he returned to the bar in the North. His success continued, and men pointed to him as a coming man.

Then in 1930 he took silk. This was the greatest gamble of his life. It meant that he would have to come to London and build up a new career . . . years of hard work before he could reach the heights he had achieved in the North.

Now his risk has been justified and he has risen to an even greater eminence.

STREICHER KEEPS 2 SETS OF BOOKS ON JEWS

The double bookkeeping kept by Julius Streicher with regard to Jews, is emphasized in an editorial in the Glasgow Herald, which reads:

It is all to the good to find Herr Julius Streicher, the National Socialist leader for Franconia and editor of the anti-Semitic sheet, Der Stuermer, announcing that there must be no pogroms of Jews in his district. It appears that “irresponsible elements” in Nuremberg have spread a rumor that a Jew has attempted to assassinate Herr Hitler and are inciting the public to retaliate by pogrom. Herr Streicher takes a firm stand. “No one but myself issues orders,” he says. And his orders are that the peace must be kept.

The “Gauleiter” for Franconia does not seem to have been in very close touch with the editor of Der Stuermer when he issued this edict. Officially Herr Streicher keeps the peace: unofficially—that is, editorially—he still does everything possible to stir up ill feeling against the Jews and the smaller they are the more does he harry them. The latest issue of his journal to reach this country contains an article reiterating his theory that the Jews commit ritual murders, and giving what he holds to be two specific instances. The evidence he produces would not hang a dog, but since his propaganda is obviously directed at simple people some of his slanders are bound to stick.

RACE IDEOLOGY BRANDS GERMANY ‘NUISANCE’

Commenting editorially on the Nazi kidnaping of Berthold Jacob, the German Jewish refugee, the New York Herald Tribune says:

The German Jew is a member of the German racial state’s subject people. He is state property, just as “the King’s Jews” were, in medieval England, the property of the crown. Once the Nazi has established in his own mind his moral right to govern the affairs of the elect under any flag, the assumption of a similar right over the racial state’s subjects under other jurisdictions is an easy step. It need scarcely be pointed out that just as the application of this racial ideology to the affairs of German-speaking Austrians, Czechoslovakians and so forth makes Germany a European menace, so the application of it to individuals abroad will make Germany an international nuisance.

ALIEN STUDENTS THREATEN TO QUIT FRANCE

The Associated Press, reporting on the movement against foreign students in French universities, says:

Foreign medical students in Paris, including Americans, issued a protest against recent anti-foreign demonstrations on the part of French medical students. The protest contained an intimation that the students would leave Paris unless the movement against them was brought to a close.
