With veterans from all over the free world in attendance, and a five-man Israeli delegation prominently participating, the eighth General Assembly of the World War Veterans Federation today adopted a resolution,, unanimously, calling for free navigation for all nations through all international waterways and the elimination of economic boycotts as a weapon for attainment of political results.
Israel’s delegation, led by Meir Bar Ravhay, warmly supported another resolution, calling for the establishment of a permanent international police force “to ease international tensions and lead disputing states to resolve such disputes through direct negotiations The plan is to establish such a force on the basis of the experiences of the United Nations Emergency Force, which is on duty in the Gaza Strip and along the shore of the Gulf of Akaba.
In the presence of Lt. Gen. E. L. M. Burns, commander of the UNEF, Mr. Ravhay praised the work of the UNEF on the Israel-Egyptian border. At the same time, he announced that he has “full authority” to offer, on behalf of Israel, direct, face-to-face peace talks with Arab states.
