The American Jewish Congress, in a telegram to World’s Fair President Robert Moses, today protested the decision to hold a party for 30,000 Fair employes on the evening of September 7, which falls on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Joachim Prinz, president of the Congress, said in his message to Mr. Moses that the selection of the date was both “thoughtless” and “offensive.”
“By choosing a date for the employee celebration that falls on one of the most sacred days of the Jewish calendar,” Rabbi Prinz declared, “the Fair Corporation has shown a contemptuous disregard for the sensibilities of thousands of its employes of the Jewish faith. Such thoughtless action will be considered offensive not only by many Jewish employes of the Fair, who will not be able to attend the event, but also by many non-Jews who hold a decent respect for the opinion of their neighbors of different races and religions.”
