The worst fear of German Jewry – an immediate election, with the probable return of a Hitlerist Government – is to be realised, with President Hindenburg’s decision to-day to dissolving the Reichstag.
The Hitlerists are triumphant and the cry “Hail Hitler” “Perish Judea” is heard on all sides. People who do not belong to the Hitlerist movement are joining in the cry, and giving the Hitlerist salute in the streets. There appears to be a general landslide to the Hitlerist side.
The ban on the Hitlerist storm troops, which was the cause of General Schleicher overthrowing the Minister of Defence, General von Groener, whose position he now holds, is also to be lifted, a promise to this effect being given to-day by General Schleicher in an interview with Count Helldorf, the leader of the Hitlerist storm troops in Berlin, the hero of the Berlin anti-Jewish excesses last Rosh Hashanah.
President Hindenburg decided to dissolve Parliament, it is stated, because of a declaration made to-day by the Chaiman of the Centre Party, Canon von Kaas, that the Centre Party Executive had, at its meeting to-day, condemned the methods in which the Government headed by von Papen (a member of the Party) had come into office and refusing its support. In the present constitution of the Reichstag the von Papen Government would consequently have been unable to obtain a vote of confidence.
None of the Jewish leaders here are able to express any opinion at present with regard to the new situation. The general feeling among them is that it is only a question of a few months now till Hitler obtains control of the country.
