An effort to amend the New York state law, according to which competitive examinations for the state scholarships in Cornell University are held each year on the first Saturday in June, will be made during the coming session of the State Legislature by the Jewish Sabbath Alliance of America. The Alliance will seek to amend the law so as to make it possible for orthodox Jewish students to participate in these examinations.
Dr. Bernard Drachman, President of the Alliance, in a communication to Mr. A. W. Skinner, Director of the State Education Department at Albany, has pointed out that this competitive examination ceases to be competitive inasmuch as it eliminates a certain group, which is otherwise entitled to take the tests, and that this is rather a violation of the spirit of the law.
