Two private letters from Bucharest published in the Jewish Daily Forward reveal that all Yiddish and Hebrew schools in Rumania have been liquidated under a new law on education promulgated by the government. One letter emphasizes that more than 15,000 pupils attended these schools. The names of the authors of the letters are withheld, but they are known to be persons active in Jewish cultural life.
The author of one of the letters, dated, “Bucharest, Oct. 29, 1948,” emphasizes that the Jews were promised that Yiddish and Hebrew would be taught in such schools in Rumania where enrollment of Jewish pupils is 20 percent or more. However, this promise has not been kept so far, he declares. He maintains that today “there is not a single school where either Yiddish or Hebrew or Jewish history is taught.”
