THE “FIRST NATIONAL YIDDISH CULTURE CONFERENCE,” HELD OVER THE WEEKEND AT THE BROADWAY CENTRAL HOTEL AND LATER THE MANHATTAN LYCEUM, ELECTED ELEVEN DELEGATES TO A WORLD CONGRESS FOR THE DEFENSE OF YIDDISH CULTURE TO BE HELD IN PARIS SEPT. 17. ABOUT 800 PERSONS PARTICIPATED IN THE CONFERENCE AS INDIVIDUALS OR AS REPRESENTATIVES OF ORGANIZATIONS, IN ADDITION TO MANY SPECTATORS. IT WAS ALSO DECIDED TO ESTABLISH A PERMANENT YIDDISH CULTURE COMMITTEE.
THE CONFERENCE OPENED SATURDAY NIGHT AT TOWN HALL AND CONTINUED ALL DAY YESTERDAY. SPEAKERS INCLUDED BEN-ZION GOLDBERG, WHO PRESIDED AT THE OPENING SESSION, JOSEPH OPOTASHU, H. LEIVICK, M. OLGIN, DR. ALEXANDER MUKCONI, KALMAN MARMOR, MOSHE NADIR AND JOEL SLONIM, WHO READ A SPEECH OF DR. CHAIM ZHITLOWSKY, ABSENT BECAUSE OF ILLNESS. THE DELEGATES ELECTED TO THE PARIS CONGRESS ARE MR. OLGIN, MR. OPOTASHU, MR. LEIVICK, MR. MARMOR, DR. MUKDONI, M. EVENSKY, REUBEN SALTZMAN, Z. WEINPER, DAVID IGNATOV, DR. FOX AND A PAINTER WHO WILL BE DESIGNATED LATER.
