Yiddish scholar Eli Katz, who was at the center of a U.S. loyalty oath dispute in the 1960s, died July 22 in Oakland, Calif. He was 77. In 1964, Katz’s teaching contract at the University of California, Berkeley was not renewed when he refused to answer questions about his political background.
